February 13--Hinkson Slough Fishout
February 15--Fly Tier's Roundtable with Ryan Shea, 6:30 at NDOW
March 6--Annual Banquet
Hello Fellow Flyfishers,
This may be a slow time of the year for fly fishing, but there’s a lot going on in the club. It is time to renew your memberships and purchase a ticket for our annual banquet at the Airport Plaza on March 6. You can get your tickets from a board member or pick them up at the Reno Fly Shop. Tickets will also be available at the door, but we encourage you to buy your tickets before February 26. We will be accepting only cash and checks at the banquet this year-no credit cards. So remember to bring your checkbooks. Club members who renew their memberships and purchase their banquet tickets by February 26 are eligible for the early bird drawing for a California fishing license. Our main raffle for the banquet is a half day trip with Arlo Townsend, who may be the best fly angler on the Truckee River. These tickets are $5.00 and available with the banquet tickets.
Mark Warren has arranged our guest speaker, Kevin Peterson, a notable guide from the Mammoth area. He will be sharing his secrets of catching fish on the east slope of the Sierras. All members can assist in our general raffle at the fundraiser by obtaining one of our Truckee River Flyfishers fly boxes and filling it full of their hand tied flies.
Our club held its first Healing Waters event on Saturday, January 23 at UNR. Charles Lorang, the club coordinator for the Healing Waters program was encouraged by the number of volunteers that showed up to help. We only had one veteran come to tie flies. He was instructed in the fine art of tying wooly buggers by one of the clubs best tiers, Richard Dickerson. Charles is excited about our next event for disabled veterans this spring. This will be a field day out learning the basics of fly fishing.
Ryan Shea has volunteered to run our fly tying round table events for the upcoming year. Everyone who shows up gets to tie along with Ryan. Each month, we will tie one or two patterns at the Reno Fish and Game office. In addition to tying flies, Ryan will furnish Lisa’s World Famous brownies and coffee. The first meeting is on February 15. Details will be posted in this newsletter and on the website.
There are changes coming in our club officers and board. I am excited to be handing over the President reigns to Wes Ong and Mark Warren has offered to be the Vice-President. Jerry Holtgrave will continue as the club’s Treasurer, but is ready to let someone else handle the monthly raffles. We need someone to step up and give Jerry a break. If you are interested, please contact Jerry.
Our January General Meeting featured Dan Fairbank, the manager of the Pyramid Lake Fisheries. Dan gave a good power point presentation to a packed room of hard core Pyramid Lake anglers and handled a barrage of questions about regulations at the lake. Thanks to Dan for your time and sticking in there. The fish out in February will be at Hinkson Slough on February 13. Since we are going to be there on the same day as the Carson Club we are looking into having a joint lunch.
I would also like to thank Mike Sevon for the great job he did as our Web Master and for all of the work he does for the club. Mike’s tent is always a welcome sight at our chillier fish outs and his cooking can’t be overlooked. And of course we can’t forget the amazing pictures he takes at our club events. Thanks, Mike!
For our general meeting on February 24, one of our senior members, Elliott Gritton will be showing us some of his favorite fly tying tips and techniques. You won’t want to miss this one. The year of 2010, promises to be one of change and our club offers a lot to help you in being a better fly fisher. We hope you join us in this year’s adventure.
It's time to renew your membership!
